Aquatic Health Lab

Aquatic Health staff monitor and study marine organism diseases, die-offs, fish kills, and their causes –such as infectious agents, parasites, algae blooms, toxins or water quality.

Aquatic Health Field Investigations

When an aquatic health event has been identified, we may respond by conducting a field investigation to determine the cause of the event. We frequently work closely with FWC’s Harmful Algae Bloom Lab to investigate fish kills related to red tide. Occasionally, novel or significant aquatic health issues trigger more extensive research projects such as our work with Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.

Histology

We also provide histology services for other research groups at FWC. Histology is the microscopic study of cells and tissue. This is typically done to help identify pathologic tissue, but it is also helpful in studying anatomy and cell development.
