Employment with FWRI

The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute recruits primarily scientists and science technicians. Business services and facility maintenance also require the expertise of qualified management, administrative, public information, clerical and maintenance staff.

The Broadband Classification and Compensation Program incorporates the Career Service (CS), Select Exempt Service (SES) and Senior Management Service (SMS) systems. Of the Institute’s CS/SES/SMS positions, most are Career Service (CS). CS positions include most research, technical, administrative and maintenance positions. There is a one-year probationary period for career service positions. The Selected Exempt Service (SES) includes middle management positions such as assistant directors, research administrators, business and facility managers, etc., and some professional positions such as physicians and attorneys. The Senior Management Service (SMS) includes upper management and policy-making positions.  Both the SES and SMS serve "at will."

All of these positions, CS/SES/SMS, offer a generous benefits package including, paid leave, employee/employer paid retirement, worker’s compensation, life insurance and employer contributions for health insurance. Supplemental insurance plans such as dental, vision, disability, etc., are employee paid, but are available through payroll deduction.

Other Personal Service Employment
Other-Personal-Services (OPS) employment is an "at will" employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing temporary or seasonal tasks. Most OPS positions at the Institute are supported by grant funding. Although OPS employment does not provide paid leave or employer-paid retirement benefits OPS are covered by worker's compensation and are eligible to participate in the state's Tax Deferred Compensation Program, which is an employee-paid retirement plan and if eligibility requirements are satisfied, OPS may participate in health and other supplemental insurance plans provided under the Affordable Care Act. OPS employees, unless exempt, are required to participate in a tax-deferred alternate retirement investment plan which replaces usual social security contributions.
